Ask HairyAlien: Baby Gear Edition

In part two of our ongoing series, Nick asks:

Carolyn and I are quite the fans of our stroller but we've also got a sling/wrap that we use when carting around a stroller is just too much. What is your preferred mode of baby transportation?

Now that Harper is pushing 20 pounds, my most common carrier for him is the stroller. While I liked our Peg Perego stroller fine in the beginning, I do a lot of walking on a daily basis and the constant use has revealed some critical faults in the design. I hate that I can't steer or fold the thing with one hand. The wheels have also become tight with use, making the stroller feel heavier than it is. Before I get too down on Pliko, however, there are some pluses: The sun canopy provides great coverage, the basket is big enough to carry a load of groceries, and the kid tray and cup holder have come in handy now that Harper is snacking and sipping more regularly.

When Harper was a newborn, he practically lived in my Kangaroo Korner sling. I highly recommend this pouch-style carrier, for its portability (small enough to toss in the diaper bag), adjustable size, ease of baby insertion, and variety of fabrics. I still use it occasionally in the hip-carry position.

When bearing Harper's weight regularly on one of my shoulders became too much, I switched briefly from the sling to a Baby Bjorn--but I found that was still putting too much strain on my neck and shoulders. Finally, I purchased an Ergo, and I love love love it. It's great for traveling or just having on hand for places where a stroller isn't convenient (like the New York subways and the second-floor yoga studio in my neighborhood). I can wear Harper for much longer in the Ergo because it transfers most of his weight to my hips. We've got the front carry down pat, but getting Harper inserted in the piggyback position is kind of like trying to wrestle a wet monkey. I don't feel comfortable getting him onto my back without a spotter, but we're working on it. Besides, I've seen people carrying their much-older toddlers around here in these things, so I have a feeling the Ergo will be long-lived.
